How to do a Kenya Tanzania Safari On A Budget Solo

Going to Masai Mara and Serengeti can be costly due to park fees and expensive resorts. However, you can find budget tours offered by different operators. I went on one of these tours solo, and I’ll share how I had an amazing and affordable Kenya Tanzania Safari.

Here are some tours I recommend based on my experience in Kenya and Tanzania.

Overview

About Kenya’s Masai Mara

Masai Mara is a National Reserve in Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. The 1,510 km² Savannah has tons of lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos, but it’s probably most famous for the annual Wildebeest migration. The place is named after the local Masai people who live around the reserve. Grasslands and hills stretch across the land, with the Mara and Talek rivers running through. The reserve sees short downpours in November and December, and heavy rains from March to May. April is the month with the most rainfall. July-Oct is the best time to visit. The entry fees for Masai Mara vary depending on the location of the accommodation. If staying within the main National Reserve, the fee is USD 70 per adult and USD 40 per child under 12 years, per 24 hours. Fare rules vary.

About Tanzania’s Ngorongoro and Serengeti

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera—a large cauldron-like hollow that forms after the emptying of a magma chamber in a volcano eruption. The crater spans approximately 260 km² and is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, zebras, and rhinos. The area is known for its rich biodiversity and serves as a vital habitat for numerous species. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area also holds historical and cultural significance, with evidence of early human settlements and the presence of the Masai people who continue to reside there.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park is spread over northern Tanzania, adjoining the Masai Mara, and stretches over 14,763 km². As the park is significantly bigger than Masai Mara, it’s home to a larger number of animals. In fact, it is also home to the largest lion population in Africa. But because the park is so expansive, it’s not as easy as Masai Mara to spot animals. The park entry fee is USD 70 for foreigners per day.

Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s first and largest park. Set in a high interior plateau it ranges from 900 to 1800 meters above sea level. Together with Ngorongoro Serengeti was declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1981.

Which is better – Safari in Kenya or Tanzania?

Masai Mara in Kenya offers a higher concentration of animals within a smaller area, allowing for efficient wildlife viewing. In comparison, Serengeti is larger and you need to travel larger distances to sight animals and most are at a distance. Also, Tanzania provided mainly tented accommodations within the park, while Masai Mara had more reasonably priced and conveniently located resorts. However, my visit to Ngorongoro Crater (Tanzania) was the absolute highlight of my East Africa Safari tour. The breathtaking scenery featured lush marshlands, majestic mountains, and an abundance of playful animals.

In conclusion, both Masai Mara in Kenya and the Ngorongoro and Serengeti regions in Tanzania offer distinctly unique landscapes and an enthralling viewing experience. But, if you have limited time and prefer a more comfortable safari experience, Masai Mara is the recommended choice.

There are some exciting ways to do a Kenya-Tanzania Safari, and contrary to popular belief, they don’t have to be expensive. Read on.

Visas

Both the Kenyan and Tanzanian visas are fairly easy to get online. The Kenyan Visa arrived in my inbox in two hours and the Tanzanian Visa took 4 days from the day of application.

Kenya’s e-visa

Official site

*Dec 2023 update: Foreign visitors will not require a visa to enter the nation starting January, 2024*

It costs USD 55 payable by Visa or Mastercard credit card (USD 51 for the Visa + USD 4 processing fee). An application does not need flight tickets but requires a hotel/safari booking voucher. I received the e-visa within 2 hours of applying. A visa to Kenya, once approved and issued, is valid for travel within 3 months.

The visa does not ask for any vaccination proof.

The official list of Yellow Fever Vaccination centres in India is here. A passport is required as proof. The cost was INR 300. Details on how to get it in Mumbai are at the end of the blog post. A yellow fever vaccination is valid for life.

The official list of Oral Polio Vaccination (OPV) centres in India is here. This was free and didn’t need any proof of travel. Only a valid passport and a copy were required to get the OPV. An OPV is valid for a year from the date of issue.

Tanzania’s e-visa

Official site

It costs USD 50.75, payable by Visa or Mastercard credit card. I was entering and leaving from Nairobi, Kenya, and I uploaded the ticket for Nairobi, indicating I was crossing over from Namanga to Serengeti. The visa was approved within 4 days of application. You can also opt for a Visa On Arrival at Namanga, which is the Kenya-Tanzania land border crossing point. But the crossing is a busy place and this is better avoided.

Best Season to Visit

June to October are the driest months in the Masai Mara and Serengeti, with all-over pleasant weather (averaging 20°C) and therefore, the best times to visit. July to October are the months when there’s less vegetation, making animals easier to spot around water sources. August-September is high season, typically more expensive, and gets booked early. This is also (usually) when the great wildebeest river crossings across the Mara River take place. The rainy months are March, and April, which are not favourable, although I’ve known friends who’ve travelled in these months with no issues at all. I travelled in the first week of July. July is supposed to be the coldest month of the year.

If you want (more or less) guaranteed sightings of the Wildebeest crossing the Mara River – Plan your trip in August’s first or second week.

How to Do It

Overview

Several tour companies offer multi-day trips to Masai Mara, and Serengeti separately, however, finding tour operators that catered to both destinations proved to be quite challenging, especially since I was travelling solo. Shared group tours were scarce, and when available, they often required steep single supplements. Most online tour offerings were customised packages, with prices exceeding USD 2000 for a Masai Mara tour. While researching, I came across Perfect Wilderness, a tour company that proved to be a good fit for my needs. Their prompt email responses impressed me, as they addressed all of my questions and helped me plan. However, during my trip, when I talked to my other mates, I learned they used local operators who provided better deals.

My advice would be to choose (1) local operators in Kenya for Masai Mara (Socotra – Caleb Ouma +254 705 833 716 [email protected] came recommended, and there are plenty more online. Perfect Wilderness was pretty good, too), (2) cross over from Kenya to Tanzania using a shuttle service like Riverside Shuttles, and then (3) choose a local operator in Tanzania to do Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti part of the trip (e.g. Arunga Expeditions which was my tour’s partner).

A Typical Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

This day started at 8 a.m. with a pickup from the hotel, after which we were driven to Masai Mara via the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. It took about 4 hours to reach the Rhino Tourist camp. Road conditions were awesome (Hello, China!). We had lunch at the camp at 2 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., we departed for a game-viewing drive in the Mara Reserve for 2 hours.

We returned to the camp for a buffet dinner. On the Kenya side, all meals typically had a meat dish, a vegetable dish, a simple salad, rice, and a banana. Instant coffee, tea bags, and instant chocolate drinks on the side.

Stayed at: Rhino Tourist Camp

Overall day rating: 7/10

The highlight of the day: Seeing the Wildebeest congregate for the great migration in various parts of the park and seeing my first zebras, buffaloes, and giraffes. An evening safari also offers great lighting for photos and a view of animals getting ready for a night of hunting. We saw lions, too, and on average on this trip, I saw five lions each day.

Hordes of Masai approached us for photos and trinket shopping. They can be pretty aggressive, so prepare to bargain if you want that trinket. Also, don’t take pictures without permission or payment.

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive in Masai Mara National Reserve

We started with an early breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and headed to safari at 8 a.m. Today was a full-day game drive. Usually, the earlier you leave for a safari, the better your chances of seeing a lion (and a hunt or a kill) and also getting the best vantage of any sighting, but our driver and group were frequently late. Never mind, because we saw several lions, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, crocodiles, and hippos, the latter two on a Mara riverside walk—eerily silent before the frenzy of migration begins.

Return to the camp was at 4 p.m. after which some of the travellers went to the Masai Village (For a USD 20 charge)

Stayed at: Rhino Tourist Camp

Overall day rating: 9/10

The highlight of the day: After our morning game drive in the national park, we decided to have a picnic lunch under a tree with a view of the vast landscape. Finding the perfect tree took almost half an hour as most were already taken by other tourists. Finally, we found one and rushed to get there before anyone else. However, as luck would have it, we saw three lions basking underneath the tree we had chosen. We quickly found another tree to have our lunch under, but we were still shaking in trepidation. We ate our food rapidly, fearing that a lion might sneak up on us from behind. Despite the unexpected encounter, it was still a fun experience.

Day 3: Boat Ride at Lake Naivasha, Depart Masai Mara for Namanga

Today, was the last day of the Masai leg of my trip. We learnt in the morning that the rules regarding the national park pass to the Masai Mara had changed and we were not going to do the morning drive, after all.

So instead, we were taken to Lake Naivasha to be treated to hippos and a host of exotic birds.

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in Kenya, 2 hr 30 min from Nairobi and 4 hr 30 min from Masai Mara. Naivasha is home to 1500 hippos, making it a popular destination for boat rides where visitors can watch them cavort around. Despite their cute appearance, hippos are some of the most dangerous land animals, killing around 500 humans in Africa every year. In addition to hippos, the area is known for its 400 bird species, including the African Fish Eagle which we were lucky enough to see swoop in and take fish from us a couple of times. The landscape is dotted with interesting formations, making it a surreal place to visit. Though Naivasha is famous for its Flamingos, we were unable to spot any during our time there.

The area around Lake Naivasha looked posh with plenty of hotels, game parks, and rest stops. Well worth a longer visit, I’d think. Lake Naivasha Resort looked fabulous, especially with the view of the lake.

Thereafter, I was driven from Nairobi to Namanga (Kenya – Tanzania border crossing) for the Tanzania / Serengeti part of the tour. Lake Naivasha to Nairobi took about 3 hours. Nairobi to Namanga took about 3 hours. It was a long driving day!

Stayed at: Namanga River Hotel

Overall day rating: 6/10

The highlight of the day: We spent USD 20 to go on a boat ride, but the boat seemed flimsy. As we travelled, we couldn’t help but worry about the potential of an angry hippo tipping the boat over into the lake. There were so many horror stories we had heard that kept us on edge the entire time.

Day 4: Namanga/Arusha to Manyara National Park

The next day I left for Arusha (2 hours from Namanga) to join a group for the Manyara National Park. Manyara is a small park where you can do game drives for 2 to 3 hours. We had lunch at the Twiga campsite first and started our drive at around 2:30 p.m.

Manyara National Park covers an area of approximately 330 km². Its topography consists of a combination of dense forests, open grassy plains, acacia woodlands, and a beautiful alkaline lake, Lake Manyara. Although I didn’t encounter many animals during my safari, I was captivated by the mesmerising forest, which featured sudden streams and clusters of thick green trees. Overall, it was a fun and worthwhile experience. In particular, Manyara National Park is renowned for its tree-climbing lions, so perhaps you will be fortunate enough to see them!

Stayed at: Twiga campsite

Overall day rating: 6/10

The highlight of the day: My first closeup African elephant sighting, hosts of monkeys (olive baboon and the blue monkey) and my first view of the mighty baobab trees. I also saw a herd of blue monkeys turn in for the night walking in a single silent file. That was pretty cool!

Day 5: Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park

After having breakfast, we departed from Manyara and headed towards Serengeti National Park. We spent the entire day exploring the area, going on a game drive and observing the wildlife until the evening. Compared to Masai Mara, the animals in Serengeti were more distant, which was initially disappointing. However, as time went on, I began to appreciate the vast and beautiful landscape of the park. The distant rock formations, combined with the mix of green and yellow savannah grass, made for a unique and breathtaking view. Despite the scale of the park, we were still fortunate enough to spot numerous lions, hippos, and elephant herds.

Serengeti has a different topography compared to Masai Mara. It has a more stony terrain; taller, greener grass; and more trees. Also, the drivers in Serengeti use phones and in Masai Mara use radios. I think the latter helps to spot animals faster.

Lunch was at the Olduvai Gorge Monument, cooked by our travelling chef, Michael.

Stayed at: Unknown. It looked like a remote, newly established campsite. The accommodation was in the form of a tent manually put up on-site on arrival. Toilets were without light and shared (Separate for men and women). Dinner was cooked by our travelling chef. For snacks, there were popcorn and coffee or tea. At dinner, we had varied cuisine (a choice of pasta, rice, chicken, trunk-roasted-pizza, salad, pineapples, mangoes etc. Pretty delicious)

Overall day rating: 7/10

The highlight of the day: Seeing a leopard closeup and the Serengeti savannah is pretty amazing. I took some quick pictures on the grass. And sunset at Serengeti is mind-blowing (the featured image).

Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro

The first half of the day was spent doing game drives in  Serengeti and the second half was spent driving to the Ngorongoro Park campsite. We saw more lions, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, gazelles, and giraffes. In fact, giraffes turned out to be my favourite animal on the safari. That beautiful arched neck, the admirable stillness, the thoughtful-watchful eyes. Pretty remarkable.

Stayed at: Simba Campsite. The accommodation was camps put up on site. Toilets were shared (Separate for men and women. Can get crowded! But they were well-lit, frequently cleaned, and toilet paper replenished). Dinner was cooked by our travelling chef.

Overall day rating: 8/10

The highlight of the day: Getting a good leopard picture.

Day 7: Ngorongoro to Arusha

About

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is located in the Arusha region of northern Tanzania, southeast of Serengeti National Park. It occupies about 8,300 km² extending over part of the Eastern (Great) Rift Valley of eastern Africa. It is one of the world’s largest unbroken calderas, i.e. a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses. Also, in the area are the archaeological sites of Olduvai Gorge and Laetolil, within which were found hominid remains dating from 2.1 million and 3.6 million years ago, respectively.

Stayed at: the Venus Premier Hotel.

Overall day rating: 10/10

The highlight of the day:

My day at Ngorongoro Crater was amazing. We started the day by seeing a lion hunt a giraffe and ended with seeing a rhino and her kid. Both are extremely rare sights and I was blessed to see both. I couldn’t take clear pictures of either, but I hope to remember both forever. The crater is pretty amazing, too. The weather was cloudy and cold, and the scenery was pretty much spectacular and surreal.

Regarding the lion hunt, although it was too far for me to capture a picture, it was an incredibly exciting experience. A lioness successfully brought down a zebra, and three other lions, possibly her cubs, joined her for the feast. It was fascinating to witness the entire chase unfold, from the beginning to the end. One observation I made was that lions are quite cunning. The whole process involved moments of hiding, approaching, hiding again, until finally making an appearance. On the other hand, zebras didn’t show much intelligence. Despite outnumbering the lion, they merely watched from a distance as their companion was devoured. The captured zebra put up a fight until the very end, kicking and struggling. And I held my breath from start to finish, ending up with goosebumps and a thudding heart. It was incredible.

Day 8: Arusha to Nairobi

I was picked up at my hotel by a shuttle service at 7:30 a.m. and driven to Nairobi, arriving at the airport at around 3:00 p.m. Thereafter, I took the flight to return to Mumbai.

The 8-Day Safari Cost

It cost me shy of USD 1600 per person sharing for the whole trip. Inclusions in the cost: accommodation, all Park fees in Kenya and Tanzania, bottled water, all meals as per itinerary, shared transport in safari vehicles, pickup and drop off to hotels, and shuttle ticket from Arusha to Nairobi on the last day. Exclusions: drinks, balloon safari @ USD 380 per person (conducted on day 2 early in the morning and continuing with the normal program), Masai Village @USD 20 per person, and tips.

Nairobi in 12 Hours

About Nairobi

Kenya Airlines has the cheapest flights from Mumbai and connects to several African cities. Therefore, you will have some time to spend in Nairobi.

Nairobi serves as the capital and largest city of Kenya. It is located in the southern part of the country and enjoys a central position, making it an economic and political hub. A quick activity to do on a layover is visiting The Nairobi National Park, located just outside the city’s borders, very close to the airport. It’s a unique experience that will allow you to see wildlife against the backdrop of a modern skyline. Combine this with a visit to the Giraffe and Orphan Elephants Centre if you have more time.

Nairobi is often referred to as the “Green City in the Sun” due to its numerous parks, gardens, and open spaces. These include Uhuru Park, Karura Forest, and Nairobi Arboretum. It is also called “Silicon Savannah” because it is home to a thriving startup ecosystem and tech companies.

A Nairobi Walking Tour

I opted to do a walking tour in the CBD where I was staying. The tour picked me up from the airport (for USD 10), helped me settle into my hotel, and showed me around CBD in 3 hours (which eventually turned out to be 6 hours since the guide Susan and I got along quite well). It cost me USD 40 and was fun and cost-effective. I wholeheartedly recommend them.

On the walking tour, I saw the Jeevanjee Park (with the sleeping men), Jamia Mosque, Moi Avenue and the Tom Mboya statue, Biashara Street, the City Market, had a first visit to Java House, browsed books at the McMillan Memorial Library, stopped at Sarova Stanley Hotel, the Dedan Kimathi Statue, ending with the view of Nairobi from the roof of Kenyatta International Conference Center (500 KES entry).

Where to Stay in Nairobi

I stayed at Hotel Mokka City in CBD which was central and inexpensive. Best Western nearby is another good option in CBD.

The locality of Karen is a good place to stay, too (Posh!). Arabella Suites is a good option in Karen.

Alternatively, Ibis Styles at Westland is great. The Westland area is great for some nighttime clubbing!

Good to Know

About Nairobi International Airport Jomo Kenyatta

Jomo Kenyatta Nairobi International Airport is the main international airport in Kenya. It is a small airport with only one arrival and departure hall. Take an Uber to get to the city centre from Nairobi Airport. It costs around USD 10 and takes around 30 minutes. Most hotels offer pick-up for USD 25 or above, so Uber is quite cost-effective.

The airport has two big duty-free areas and nice souvenir shops. However, if you want to buy souvenirs, bargaining with Masai women is recommended. Also, there is a new Java coffee shop near the departure area.

Getting SIM Card and Currency at Nairobi Airport

Right outside the departure gate are the 3 counters of Safaricom, Telkom and Airtel next to each other. Safaricom sim card, although more expensive than Vodafone and Telekom, has the best 4G/5G network. The rates are as below. Despite being promised otherwise, my Safaricom SIM did not work in Tanzania. Perhaps, I had to do a setting which I missed. Most campsites had select areas with WiFi in Tanzania, so that worked out okay.

Kenya Tanzania itinerary solo do it yourself | JKIA Airport

There are ATMs and exchange counters inside the airport (before the arrival exit gate) and also one next to the SIM card stores. Exchange rates are competitive and you can consider exchanging your currency here. You can exchange Kenyan shillings for Tanzanian shillings at the Namanga border. There are stores both at the border crossing building and also in Namanga town (ask your hotel to help if you are staying overnight). Most establishments accept dollars, but rates quoted in dollars are higher (liberally rounded off to a higher number). You will end up paying more.

Border Crossing Between Kenya and Tanzania

During my journey from Nairobi (Kenya) to Arusha (Tanzania) via Namanga (at the border but in Kenya), I arrived at 11 p.m. and the process of crossing the border and obtaining a visa took only ten minutes. There are three counters to go through: one for showing yellow fever vaccination proof, one for departure stamping from either Kenya or Tanzania and one for entry stamping into the respective country. On my return journey, I took a shuttle bus and the border crossing lasted over an hour (at 11 a.m.). Everyone had to disembark, have their luggage inspected, and then re-board the bus on the Kenyan side. If you have any Tanzanian or Kenyan shillings to exchange, there are women selling trinkets who accept all currencies. There is also a currency exchange counter available inside the visa building.

Getting the Yellow Fever Vaccination in Mumbai

I took the yellow fever vaccination on May 2023 from Airport Health Authority in Mumbai. Arriving at 10:30 AM, I found myself among the last few individuals in line, holding the number 232 out of 245 people present. The queue had already formed hours earlier, with some, mainly airline crew and seamen, waiting since 6 AM. It is worth noting that the registration process starts at 10 AM and ceases once the daily quota of 300 vaccines is reached or by 11:30 AM.

To initiate the process, I filled out a slip and patiently awaited my turn to be called for the yellow card form. Additionally, I needed to pay INR 300 in cash for the vaccine. Those requiring the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) had to complete an additional form, along with presenting supporting documents such as a visa, ticket, or invitation letter at the AHO. The OPV dose was administered concurrently with the yellow fever vaccine.

After completing the necessary paperwork (advisable to carry a pen) and payment (carry cash), there was an additional hour-long wait before receiving the vaccine. Overall, the entire procedure took approximately 3.5 hours from the time of my arrival. It came to my attention that yellow fever vaccine stock was limited, with only two locations in Maharashtra currently offering the vaccine.

However, neither my yellow fever vaccination nor oral polio vaccination certificates were checked by Indian visa officers at any point. The yellow fever vaccination certificate was checked only during my border crossing from Kenya to Tanzania.

What is the Great Migration

(From Wikipedia | Medina, N. (2019). Where Is the Serengeti?)

The Great Migration is the world’s longest overland migration. The complete migration route is around 800 km (500 mi). South of this migration route covers the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where around half a million Wildebeest are born between January and March. By March, at the beginning of the dry season, roughly 1.5 million and 250,000 zebras start to migrate heading north towards Masai Mara in Kenya. Common eland, plains zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle join the wildebeest. In April and May, the migrating herds pass through the Western Corridor. To get to the Masai Mara, the herds have to cross the Grumeti and Mara Rivers where around 3,000 crocodiles lie in wait. For every wildebeest captured by the crocodiles, 50 drown. When the dry season ends in late October, the migrating herds start to head back south. Around 250,000 wildebeests and 30,000 plains zebras die annually from drowning, predation, exhaustion, thirst, or disease.
